He contracted me to write a translator for Quark Express. On moving to Oxford I did a number of small jobs including a database design proposal for AVSeawork. Through Bruce I was recruited by Phil Bacon, the Technical Director of Catalyst Electonic Publishing. I have done a number of conversions of large bodies of text to and from SGML, typesetting formats and Folio Flatfile. My company was a founder of the Paneris Collective, which has done work for ISPs, Publishers and end customer websites. The collective now has 7 core members and twelve periferal members and maintains a website (http://www.paneris.org/) from which our projects are run. Starting as a trainee programmer I progressed to Project Manager with reponsibility for a 5 million pound budget for programming labour and computer equipment. Catalyst Electronic Publishing ------------------------------ Catalyst Electronic Publishing is the UK distributor of Folio Views, a multi media viewer. As Senior Technical Consultant I reported to the Technical Director. The task involved planning and implementing the translation of legacy documents into the Views language. The documents translated vary from very low-level typesetting documents to SGML corpora. Thomson Tax ----------- Using Perl and SGMLC I helped produce the CD-Rom of British Tax law. I-Way ----- I-Way is one of the leading ISPs in the UK. With their success in network provision has come a considerable amount of website implementation which has been undertaken by myself and my associates. Software Projects ================= Contract Monitoring and Control System -------------------------------------- A system to control labour and materials booking in a project oriented business. Electronic Warfare Database --------------------------- A database of EW signatures from which a sub set could be selected for an operational area. Written in Basic on a VAX and PDP. Stock Control for Kenya Navy ---------------------------- Designed, implemented and installed a small stock control system, written in Basic on a Professional. This involved training a group of 20 Kenyan ratings in the use of the system in the naval base in Mombasa. Internal Production Software ---------------------------- Design and implementation of an inverted database of Naval Spares. The system was implemented in Basic and RDB. Integrated Logistics Support for Saudi Arabia --------------------------------------------- Design, Management and Negotiation of a large relational database for the maintenance and production of all aspects of ship upkeep. Integration of maintenance job material requirements with stock control. Online storage of maintenance instructions. This work involved the understanding of large existing computer systems and the negotiation of the design with the customer. The interpretation of the specification required study of the American CALS requirements and frequent visits to Riyadh, Jedda and Jubail. Prolog Parser for Malformed English Utterances ---------------------------------------------- This large project involved using Quintus Prolog to manipulate a database of English utterances which had been transribed by linguists to represent a speech as spoken. The utterances were parsed and displayed under X Windows. Database design proposal for Dartmouth Naval Training School ------------------------------------------------------------ A database to maintain and repair the vessels and base of the Dartmouth Naval Training School. A Xyvision Converter -------------------- A very large Perl script to translate from Xyvision typesetting documents to Folio Flat File. Views Extension --------------- A Windows DLL to work with the Folio Views API, written in C++. Scots Law Times --------------- Converted large corpora (60Mb) of SGML to Folio Flat File, creating a CD-ROM of 100 years of Scottish Law reports. Thomson Tax ----------- Manipulated, validated and corrected large body of Accounting Law in SGML.
